Uniross is one of the world leaders in rechargeable technology and they have pushed the boundaries again with the introduction of the Hybrio battery; the first Hybrid battery which is ready to use instantly but can also be recharged and used again and again.
Normal rechargeable NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries come delivered with little or no charge in them so when you buy new batteries, the first thing you need to do is charger them up before you can use them. Hybrio batteries are delivered pre-charged and are ready for use directly off the shelf eliminating the need to charge prior to use. Once the battery has run down after its first use, like a conventional rechargeable battery it can be recharged up to 500 times before it needs replacing.

The benefits from using rechargeable technology are great not just for the environment but your pocket too! Take an example of use of AA batteries in a digital camera:
As many of you will know modern digital cameras can go through normal disposable Alkaline batteries very quickly meaning that you will have to buy replacement batteries constantly to keep your camera going. This is not only damaging to your pocket but to the environment too, causing many tons of unnecessary waste.
One Hybrio battery weighs 30g, this equates to 12.5Kg of waste produced by 500 disposable batteries; just taking this statistic into account, the benefits to the environment are obvious.
NiMh batteries can last up to 4 times longer than standard Alkaline batteries in high drain electronic devices such as digital cameras per charge. Couple this with the fact that NiMh batteries can be recharged up to 500 times before they need replacing; the benefits of using rechargeable technology are all the greater. One report suggests that savings of up to £650 per year could be made by replacing Alkaline with NiMh in your digital camera.
So apart from the fact that Hybrio batteries do not need charging before their initial use there are other major benefits over conventional rechargeable batteries. Standard NiMh batteries suffer from a high rate of self discharge; this means that the battery loses charge even when not in use. A standard NiMh can lose up to 1% charge per day, so if left in a drawer for 2 weeks then the battery would only have around 75% charge, after 4 weeks 50% charge and so on. This means that even when you are not using the batteries you will need to charge them again before use, Hybrio batteries are different.
Hybrio batteries do not suffer from such a high rate of self discharge than standard rechargeable batteries, once charged, Hybrio retain charge even after 6 or even 12 months of storage eliminating the need to re-charge before use.
Despite this improvement in charge retention, the other benefits of standard NiMh batteries have been maintained; for example, when used in digital cameras, you can expect to take four times more shots with a Hybrio battery than a standard Alkaline.
To gain the full benefits from Hybrio batteries, Uniross recommend you use the Hybrio marked chargers, however Hybrio batteries can be charged with most modern NiMh chargers.
