Over the last few months we have been getting more and more enquiries about replacement Electric Bike batteries. With minimal knowledge of electric bikes prior to this we began doing some research into the world of electric bikes to see if we could offer a service to people requiring replacement batteries. We have been working closely with the people at A to B magazine; they have been offering us assistance as well as providing us with some battery packs to take a look at.
We have found, which is often the case with battery applications, there are may different makes, models and variants of electric bike out there, because of this there are also many different types of battery pack that have been specially designed for the various different models. This makes it almost impossible for us to offer any kind of standard product/service for replacement electric bike batteries, so what we are going to do is build up a database as we go, making records of the packs we successfully refurbish.
If you require your electric bike battery refurbishing, the best thing to do is to send us some photographs of your existing pack, ideally some internal shots with the cover off would be useful so we can identify the cells in the pack. Along with this, the more information regarding the spec of the battery you can provide to us the better, most importantly the Voltage, Capacity (mAh or Ah), chemistry (NiCd or NiMh), or as with some of these packs the Wattage (either W or Wh), and any other electrical information is always useful. We can then look at the pictures and the specifications and get back to you with details of a possible refurbishment.
The diagram below shows an example of a pack we have done in the past, is has 20 NiMh D cells wired in series to give a 24V 9Ah battery. With all the packs, you would need to send us your old one (including the casing); we would remove the old cells, build a replacement pack with new cells, insert it and seal the case back up around it.
With regards to what type of battery we can refurbish, we can do either NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) packs or NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) Packs. We currently do not have the facilities to refurbish Li-Ion packs, due to the nature of Li-Ion cells and the way in which they charge, there are limitations on the way manufacturers release plain Li-Ion cells which makes it difficult to refurbish these kinds of packs.
If you have any queries regarding electric bike batteries or any other battery application please contact us either via e-mail of telephone using the contact details below.
